Microsoft wants those using the trial version of its next OS to switch to the Release Candidate.
Microsoft is urging consumers who are using the beta version of its Windows 7 operating system to switch to the more fully developed Release Candidate as the Windows 7 Beta will enter its expiration period next week.
"Still on Windows 7 Beta? You need to move to the RC and fast," Microsoft's Stephen Rose said in a blog post Tuesday.
Users who continue with Windows 7 Beta beyond next week are in for a nasty surprise. "Starting July 1, the Beta will start to reboot every 2 hours and expire Aug 1st," wrote Rose. Microsoft will continue to offer Windows 7 RC as a free download until Aug. 15.

Prototype Nokia phone recharges without wires |
|
23rd June 2009 - 16:45 - by Arie

Pardon the cliche, but it's one of the holiest of Holy Grails of technology: Wireless power.
And while early lab experiments have been able to "beam" electricity a few feet to power a light bulb, the day when our laptops and cell phones can charge without having to plug them in to a wall socket still seems decades in the future.
Nokia, however, has taken another baby step in that direction with the invention of a cell phone that recharges itself using a unique system: It harvests ambient radio waves from the air, and turns that energy into usable power. Enough, at least, to keep a cell phone from running out of juice.

Free Upgrades to Windows 7 Coming Soon |
|
23rd June 2009 - 16:38 - by Arie
|
In a move aimed at keeping sales of PCs moving while users wait for Windows 7, Microsoft is about to begin a sales promotion that lets people who buy PCs pre-installed with Windows Vista — between June 26 and October 22 when Windows 7 ships — to get a free or discounted upgrade to Windows 7 when it ships in late October.
Don't grab the credit card and head for the local computer store just yet, though. That deal doesn't kick in for another ten days.
Microsoft's "Tech Guarantee" program is officially named the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program (UOP), and it's optional for PC OEMs and retailers to participate in.

Microsoft: Outlook Problems Traced To Google Bugs |
|
19th June 2009 - 15:19 - by Arie
|
Microsoft Wednesday warned that the installation of two Google Apps Sync plug-ins disables Outlook's ability to search all of Outlook's data.
Dev Balasubramanian, Outlook Product Manager, posted the heads-up on Microsoft's blog, saying that when a Google Apps user installs the sync plug-in for Outlook, the plug-in modifies a registry key which disables Windows Desktop Search from indexing and searching all Outlook data, not just the Outlook data being synchronized from GMail.
Since Outlook search relies on the indexing performed by Windows Desktop Search, Outlook search functions are broken as a result.

Microsoft's Bing May Have Google Cofounder Worried |
|
19th June 2009 - 15:15 - by Arie
|
Google cofounder Sergey Brin is reportedly so rattled by Microsoft's Bing search engine that he has a team working on Google updates. In about two weeks, Bing has increased Microsoft's penetration into the search market, leapfrogging Yahoo and taking market share from Google. But an analyst said it's Yahoo that should be worried.
Does Bing have Google shaking in its boots? Google may indeed be concerned about Microsoft's breakout Bing launch, analysts said.
"I do think Google is taking Bing very seriously," said Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence. "According to the early traffic indications, there has been some bump for Bing."

Microsoft Confirms Plans to Release Free Anti-Virus Service |
|
15th June 2009 - 16:33 - by Arie
|
If Morro provides good protection, it could "provide a significant value for users." From Microsoft's perspective, Morro, the free anti-virus software could improve user experience with Microsoft-based products and could help them to improve their charged-for enterprise products.
As it gets ready to launch a new operating system, Microsoft confirmed Wednesday that it is getting ready to release a free anti-virus service later this year.
The new service is currently code-named Morro, apparently after the Morro de Sao Paolo beach area in Brazil. Observers are expecting the free service to compete directly with McAfee and Symantec, two of the leading companies in this field.

Windows 7 Won't Include Explorer In EU |
|
15th June 2009 - 16:31 - by Arie
|
Microsoft is stripping the browser from the OS in an attempt to satisfy market regulators.
Prompted by antitrust concerns, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) said Thursday that it plans to ship a version of its Windows 7 operating system in Europe that does not come bundled with the Internet Explorer Web browser.
"We're committed to making Windows 7 available in Europe at the same time that it launches in the rest of the world, but we also must comply with European competition law as we launch the product," Dave Heiner, Microsoft's deputy general counsel, wrote in a blog post.
